Acommentary on the paper given by Dr. Asgar is presented. Agreement with that paper's contents on the trend toward palladium-based and other lower-cost alloys is rendered. However, with a view toward future competitiveness and quality of prosthetic restorations, this commentary looks for the application of new and emerging technologies. To implement these developments, the National Institute of Dental Research is urged to find avenues to support applications for dentistry in selected instances, despite adverse reviews from an entrenched establishment.
